I’d like to say right of the bat that I have never seen any of the previous Addam’s Family films or shows which could incite me praising this film more than I should but I won’t know till I see previous incarnations.
First thing I noted while watching this film is that the animation is absolutely atrocious. Every character looks disgusting and cheap, the movements feel unauthentic, the detail looks rushed. I simple found this film a chore to look at. Even Ugly Dolls from the beginning of the 2019 looked better than this. However, the main family’s personalities made up for that.
Wednesday was a huge stand out, delivering (in my opinion) many hilarious one liners and morbid puns that just made me giggle far more than I expected. The film stars Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, and Nick Kroll. Finn Wolfhard (an actor that gets a tremendous amount of work that for the life of me cannot understand why) and Nick Kroll give very weak performances and eventually ride on the line of annoyance. Chloë Grace Moretz is the highlight of the film and gives a memorable performance. Her Wednesday was an absolute delighted and had me laughing almost every time she was on screen. Oscar Isacc and Charlize Theron also give decent enough performances that neither detract or enhance the film.
The story is fairly basic: a town finds the Addams creepy and they try to remove them. At points I focuses too much on the town and its forgettable residents. The star of the home improvement show (voiced by Allison Janney) was one of the most annoying characters I’ve seen this year and every time she appeared on screen I couldn’t prevent my eyes from rolling. The soundtrack did its job and had a great interpretation of the classic Addams theme. However, the licensed music felt out of place and fortunately leaves before it over stays it’s welcome. The Addam’s Family was a decent film that gave me a few good laughs and a fairly fun time.
